4:3 x WUTI: 'Losing Ground' screening + L.A. Rebellion symposium
Women Under The Influence has been sharing the stories of cinema directed by women through events and media since 2015. Next month, the community launches its first festival, WUTI goes IdyllWILD, taking place in the magical town of Idyllwild, CA, for a weekend celebrating film directed by women, for everyone. The programme includes a mix of arthouse films, talks, and experiences, including two events in collaboration with 4:3.
The first 4:3 event is a screening of Kathleen Collins’ semi-autobiographical film 'Losing Ground', which is finally starting to gain the recognition it deserves nearly 35 years after its release. Followed by a talk with Nina Lorez Collins & Mandy Harris Williams, the event will dive into the legacy of the first feature written and directed by women of color in America.
The second 4:3 event is a symposium-style event with a group of directors from the LA Rebellion speaking to the movement, screening some of their classic works and celebrating the contribution of women to this historic moment. The directors participating and/or showing work include Julie Dash, Barbara McCullough, O.Funmilayo Makarah & Monona Wali.
